Mission:
The Town of Chichester has long enjoyed its rural character. Once a community of thriving mills, carriage shops, and taverns; Chichester boasted effervescent town centers and extensive local agriculture. Today, some would characterize Chichester as a "bedroom community," serving the residential needs of the larger retail and service industry workforces of the region. Chichester has recently experienced and foresees increased sprawl, the overtaking of resources that require preservation, as well as a shift toward higher priced housing.
Project Goals
The Community of Chichester is steeped in historic, natural, and cultural resources. These resources have maintained Chichester as a heart of rural integrity while providing for the expansion of a central commercial corridor. In order to provide for the protection of its assets, it is imperative that the Community organize, develop, and prepare a Master Plan to not only use as a guide towards the future, but as a reference document, a summary of local actions, and an overall wealth of information. The Housing and Conservation Planning Program (HCPP) affords Chichesterís Community a unique opportunity to collaborate the efforts of the Planning Board, Conservation Commission, Selectmen, Historical Society and our residents to comprehensively examine our assets as well as current and future needs. Some of these future needs may include but
are not limited to the promotion of resource area conservation, high-density residential areas and the development of affordable work-force housing areas. By completing the tasks set forth in our proposed budget and scope of work, our goal is to assemble accumulated knowledge into such a document that is to be physical, long-range, comprehensive, a guide to decision making, and most importantly, a statement of public policy.
